In the first four months of our eighth year as a full service CCSA office, the little P.B. center distributed just under 2,000 food packs, helped with 800 sets of clothes, multitudes of socks, tooth brushes etc. We helped with 35 I.D. cards and 4 birth certificates and the volunteer Nurse’s Medical Outreach clinic assisted over 200 people with medical issues, information and referrals to clinics in the area. Member churches and individuals have for the most part kept our shelves filled. About half of our shelter guests have been able to move on to housing and other programs and, in this business, that’s a success. Our Center continues to be an information point for our member Churches and the community. We are on the lookout for new resources to share and we always answer the phone during open hours.

| Some twenty years ago, the idea of opening a shelter without its own dedicated building became reality. Now there are seven branches, each with their own roster of local churches in San Diego County. During fall, winter and early spring of the 2006- 2007 season, over 110 congregations in seven different regions helped over 240 guests with beds, clothing, meals and structured case management that ties housing to a set of goals that are actively worked on by the clients. The main goal is to get people off the streets in a more lasting way. This year (2008), the Beaches Area Branch continued to be a vital link for those people who are willing to put in the effort it takes to reach escape velocity from the ties of homelessness. CCSA provided case management for 4 of the 12 beds in the Beach Area shelter. The shelter closed on May 10 this year. Seven of the 12 people CCSA assisted were able to find work, housing or other long term programs. One man used his shelter time to begin his recovery from alcohol and was accepted into Pathfinders rehabilitation program for men. A woman came to us in early recovery and while she was doing what she needed to do to stay clean and sober, someone offered her a job even though she had been out of the job market for 15 years!!! It was truly a spiritual lesson for all of us that when we do God’s will, God will give us what we need. I know that God did not want this woman to continue to suffer from her addictions and when she took the action to get help from a 12 step group, God saw to it that she would not go homeless and now she has an income and still has time for recovery and can afford a simple place to stay. The shelter was open for 18 weeks this year and my case management from the Joyce Snyder Center accounted for slightly over 500 bed nights out of a possible 520 which means we kept a 97% occupancy rate on our shelter beds for the 18 weeks. Submitted by Jack Blevins, Service Center Director and Interfaith Shelter Case Manager at CCSA’s The Joyce Snyder Center. |
